this is a poem i have analysed before in my extra curricular language class. to this day i still have not fully understood it. it's one of my favourite poems by far. :)
Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
I haven't studied this poem, however just reading it again for the first time in a long while, I feel Thomas uniquely states that there is good and evil in the world. People who do good deeds and people who are immoral. However, no matter who you are--there is only one final outcome: death.
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light, and Do not go gentle into the night" I think means live your days to fullest, if you are bad--turn good and do good deeds. Live each day like it was your last and when death finally comes you won't be angry or feel betrayed of death claiming you. You would have lived a wonderful life and now you are finally ready to die.
